| Resumo | One of the major objectives of environmental studies has been the understanding of the impact that the secondary succession has on the regional carbon budget, and its consequences in the carbon storage in the atmosphere. The use of remote sensing data can contribute to the achievement of this objective, due to the possibility of acquiring geophysical information for extended areas in a regular basis. In particular, in the last decades, radar data have been widely used in the studies of tropical forests, due to its capability of obtaining data almost independently of weather conditions. The aim of this paper is to present a methodology for the identification and characterization of the age of tropical secondary forests in a test site near Tapajos National Forest using a time series of LANDSAT/TM images, and to relate the stages of secondary forest with radar backscatter. Those images were co-registered, segmented and classified into several classes of land cover, and the resulting thematic images were superposed in a GIS system using logical (Boolean)operations to create an age map. Using this age map as a mask over several derived-from-optical and radar images, the relationship between the stages of secondary forest and the images was examined. |
